After Divas and Yiddish music, now part 1 of Indian Night Live, with concerts that have been recorded by the Concertzender over the years.
Through the years, the Concertzender has recorded many world music concerts in the Netherlands. Because world music encompasses such a large area with so many genres, we have an enormous collection of special concerts with music from all continents including the Middle East, the Mediterranean Basin, Africa, South America, India and the Arab world.
Tonight you can listen to 5 different concerts. First of all, a performance by Shubhendra and Saskia Rao from 2002, Axes Ensemble – Indian masters of percussion from 2005, Kiran & Zapp from 2008, T.M. Krishna from 2009 and Vishwa Mohan Bhatt & desert slide from 2011.
Dutch virtuoso cellist Saskia Rao-de Haas, who since 1994 has utterly devoted herself to expressing Indian classical raga music, has become known in India as the only fully skilled concert musician on cello, and her international fame is growing too. On 25 May 2002, she performed alongside her husband Shubhendra Rao in the small hall of the KIT in Amsterdam.
On Sunday 6 November 2005, the CZ recorded the Axyz Ensemble in Eindhoven, who gave a concert with two South Indian star percussionists.
Calling themselves the ‘Indian Masters of Percussion’, B.C Manjunath and Ananthakrishna Sharma performed six pieces with the Axyz Ensemble. The composers were inspired by the wealth of percussion instruments by the Carnatic and folkloristic music traditions. Among others, the mridrangam, the tavil, the damaru and the vysajanthi were taken up. The recording technician at the time was Kees van de Wiel.
On 22 November 2008, Kiran Ahluwalia and the Zapp String Quartet gave a concert at the Noorderkerk in Amsterdam. The concert was given on the occasion of the 3rd Amsterdam India Festival, themed Blended Cultures. A diversity that could also be found in this concert in Amsterdam.
Canadian/Indian singer Kiran Ahluwalia presented her Wanderlust album.
Kiran Ahluwalia was accompanied by Rez Abbasi on guitar, Gurpreet Chana op tabla, Enzo d’Aversa accordion and Dave Phillips op bas.
The Zapp String Quartet consisting of Jasper le Clercq and Friedmar Hitzer, violin, Oene van Geel, viola and Emile Visser, cello, showed once more how versatile they were.

Despite is young age, T.M. Krishna (1976) belongs to the very top of Carnatic (South Indian) vocal music.
Other performers were: R.K.Shriramkumar (violin), N.Manoj Siva (mridangam & vocals), Darshan Kumari (tanpura).
On 29 April 2011, famous mohan veena player Vishwa Mohan Bhatt performed with the gypsies of Rajasthan. The concert that will be played soon, called ‘Desert Slide’, was recorded by the Concertzender at the Tropentheater in Amsterdam. Desert Slide’s tour resulted from recordings of the album of the same name, which was recorded with musicians of the Langa and Manganiaar castes, descendants of nomadic musicians who wandered through the Rajasthan Thar Desert.
