Wandering around Jewish music

sun 15 oct 2023 17:00 hour

A Klezmer program with the Budapest Klezmer Band, the Dutch Di Gojim band and Duo A Libe.

1- The Budapest Klezmer Band, founded in 1990, comes from the heart of Europe, from the geographical location where klezmer music originates. The band’s performance is an exciting musical experience in traditional Jewish folklore. They play arrangements composed by the ensemble’s founder and musical director, Ferenc Javori, who learned and played Klezmer with the last remaining musicians from a once thriving community where this music was an integral part of Jewish life.

2- The Di Gojim orchestra, founded in 1988, consists of six enthusiastic multi-instrumentalists. Di Gojim started playing traditional Yiddish Klezmer, a mix of Eastern European folk music, gypsy music and Jewish music. In 1999 the repertoire was combined with Dutch texts by, among others, Ivo de Wijs and Robert Long. Lead singer and clarinetist Jaap Mulder saved old Eastern European music, recorded on old gray records, from oblivion by writing Dutch lyrics on it. In every possible way is associated with the theme of the album De Muur: a physical and/or psychological wall can provide safety but also form a barrier. The often melancholic songs alternate with instrumental dance pieces that make a splash. Humor, enthusiasm, musicality and virtuosity, Di Gojim has it all.

3- The duo A Libe (accordion and singing) performs traditional Yiddish songs. A Kholem means a dream. Both well-known and lesser-known songs are included on this album. Characteristic of the musical contribution of A Libe is the ‘romantic’ packaging. Accordionist Betty Visser plays her instrument as if she were singing and singer Paul Custers colors the lyrics in such a way that the emotional charge is clearly palpable.
