Scandinavian minerals
In this episode of World Minerals we put the spotlights on female voices in the Scandinavian folk music. The folk music in Scandinavia has known a big revival in the last ten years, especially driven by female musicians. Reason enough to dedicate a programme to this, also because the timbre of Scandinavian singers is remarkable. They use falsetto a lot, and ‘breathing’; and people who like Celtic singing will hear similarities. This is not really strange, given the influence of the Vikings in both regions. But the many-voiced pieces have their own sound: a harmony that sometimes almost can sound dissonant. When the Sámi (Laplanders) are involved, you can almost hear Tibetan or American-Indian overtone-singing.
