Gypsy Minerals

In this broadcast we will be featuring Gypsy or Roma music. The Roma are descendants of the nomads who travelled from the north of India to Europe and beyond, about 1000 years ago. People used to think that these people were from Egypt, therefore the name ‘Egyptians’ or Gypsies. Their music has been strongly influenced by the local traditions of the several countries they travelled through and settled in. In this World minerals we will be making a musical round trip through several countries. In the varied Roma repertoire some elements usually return; vocal improvisation, fast changes of pace and lyrics about the nomadic existence, the love and dreams about a life without discrimination.
