Nirali Kartik, singer of classic ragas and catchy fusion.
Singer Nirali Kartik, born in Mumbai, was taught to sing Indian ragas from a young age. In addition to singing the raga she is also known in the field of fusion and crossover world music. With her husband, guitarist Kartik Sjah, she formed the band Maati Baani. Maati Baani means ‘the language of the earth’, and that is what Nirali strives for with this group: combining elements of Indian raga music with other musical traditions from all over the world. Maati Baani is very succesful in doing this by cooperating with various musicians. The realization of Maati Baani’s music often happens in an interactive way. The musicians meet each other on the Internet and rehearse via Skype sessions.
The final result is not half bad. With Maati Baani, Nirali Kartik delivers one happy, catchy song after another. They are all gripping crossover gems, which are passed in review in the first half of the programme.
