Country- and bluegrass music from The Petersens and Alison Krauss

This episode is about country- and bluegrass music. In the first part of this episode, we will hear recordings from The Petersens, a country- and bluegrass band from Branson/Missouri United States, founded in 2005. All members of the group are members of the family Petersen as well: mother Karen plays bass, son Matt Petersen sings and plays the guitar, and then there are three daughters Katie, Ellen, and Julianne Petersen who play respectively violin, banjo, and mandoline and all three sing as well. The father, Jon Petersen, plays piano but he rarely plays along and can therefore not really be called a regular band member. Emmet Franz is a regular band member but is not part of the family, he plays a dobro guitar.

The Petersens play American roots music that focuses on bluegrass, country, and gospel. The group plays its own music as well as many covers and is very successful with this. They have over 63 million views and almost 400 thousand followers on YouTube. We will hear some of The Petersens’ songs from the album Shenandoah from 2017 and several of their recent recordings that have been published on YouTube.

On their website, The Petersens refer to the music of world-famous singer and violin player Alison Krauss as one of their most important musical influences, we will focus on her in the second half of the broadcast. Alison Krauss was born in Decatur, Illinois United States in 1971. She signed her first big record contract in 1987 when she was 14 years old, her first album was published when she was 16, in 1987.

Sinds then, another 13 albums were released many of them with her band Union Station. In 2017, she released together with former Led Zeppelin lead singer Robert Plant, an album called Raising Sand. Alison Krauss can also be heard in many soundtracks, for example in well-known feature films such as Cold Mountain and Oh Brother, Where Art Thou? She is also one of the most award-winning musicians. So far, she has won 27 Grammy Awards, more than any other female performer ever. She won many awards related to country- and bluegrass music as well. In this episode, Alison Krauss can be heard with a number of covers from three of her albums: Forget About It from 1999, A Hundred Miles Or More (compilation album) from 2007, and the album Windy City that was released in 2017.
