World music, compiled by Pieter de Rooij and Carolien Cleiren.

New releases by Belcirque, Yo-Yoma, Khöömei Beat, Alessia Tongo and the Tangodiaduo

Belcirque is a seven-piece band from Belgium that began as a female vocal quintet in 2007. Since then, the group has been joined by a double bassist and a guitarist. The album La Grande Fête is full of sunny South American beats, harmonies and contemporary stories with a touch of nostalgia here and there.

Last month, cellist Yo-Yo Ma released his new CD Notes for the Future. For this CD, he worked together with a number of world musicians he has met and played with in the course of his long and adventurous career.

The musicians of Khöömei Beat are all heirs to the musical culture of Tuvan music. Their ancestors believed that singing and overtone singing was a way to communicate and live in harmony with the universe. Khöömei Beat uses traditional and modern instruments and in doing so connects the old traditions with modern times. On their CD Changys Baglaash (The Lone Hitching Post), the lyrics of the songs are often about love, but especially the love for their horses.

Alessia Tondo is an Italian singer from Puglia, Italy. We know her as the singer with Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino, a group that has been featured in this programme several times. Now she has released a solo album, titled Sitar.

In 1995 Barbara Tartari and Claudio Farinone formed Tanguediaduo, being inspired by the music of Argentine composer and bandoneon player Astor Piazolla. They recently released the album “Soledad”, which was recorded on the shores of Lake Maggiore. On this CD, the tango duo has beautifully adapted and arranged a number of Piazolla’s songs for flute and guitar.
