Episode: Jaipongan, music from West Java – two singers: Dedeh Winingsih and Idjah Hadidjah.
In the 1960s, rock ‘n roll was banned for a long time in Indonesia after a call from President Sukarno to cherish Indonesian traditional music and ignore Western influences.
In this forced cultural climate, musician, choreographer and composer Gugum Gumbira (1945-2020) created a new genre in the 1970s in West Java, called jaipongan, a mixture of pop music and traditional music combined with elements from traditional West Javanese dance forms such as Ketuk Tilu and Pencak Silat. The ingredients of jaipongan consist of a small gamelan orchestra, a song structure that is tuned to gong phrases from gamelan music, a female singer, and a group of spectacular drummers who support the singing and dancing with rhythmic shouts as well as drum patterns.
In the 1970s and 1980s, jaipongan gained great popularity not only in Java, but throughout Indonesia. From the 1990s onwards, its popularity declined, but the genre still holds a meaningful place in the musical landscape of Indonesia. The creator of the jaipongan music style, Gugum Gumbira, had his own label and released many albums featuring well-known female singers accompanied by Gugum Gumbira and his orchestra, Jugala. In this broadcast, we will focus on two of these singers.
Idjah Hadidjah (photo) can be heard on two of her albums: Ulah Lali from 1980 and Iring Iring Daun Puring, also from 1980. Then, Dedeh Winingsih can be heard on her album Daun Pulus, released in 1983.
