EMS #4: Roland Kuit Composer in the Residence @Elektronmusikstudion EMS, electronic music studios in Stockholm Sweden. Roland Kuit as researcher and composer in the residence at EMS Stockholm. During his stay he met composers at EMS. In this broadcast works of these composers. 1/ Boa Petterson • "Sargast II" 06'40 * • The sound sources are Eva Lindahl's violin and Boa Pettersson's bass clarinet. Part of the material comes from live recordings via two instruments build in MAX/MSP. 2/ Ann Rosén ** • Fingerborgsbrus / Thimble noise 05'11 • This is from the project zonula occludens, tight junctions. These are the closely areas of two cells whose membranes join together forming a virtual impermeable barrier. 3/ Eva Sidén and Jens Hedman 04'41 ***** • "Double Bind Player" • The total work of art Double Bind Player is a collaboration between the composer and pianist Eva Sidén, the electro-acoustic composer Jens Hedman, and the visual artist Birgitta Muhr, moving beyond the traditional concert and exhibition formats, and expanding the audience-performer relationship. Two grand pianos are at the core of this work, both musically and visually. The grand piano is an instrument laden with prestige and tradition, in stark contrast to the light-hearted game in which it is engaged here. As if drawing in space, externalizing the motion of the notes, long • sculptural metal feelers extend from and around the grand piano. The objects extract new notes • from the piano and contribute to drawing the audience into the instrument. The sound enveloping the visitors in the room takes place on several levels. They all originate in the grand piano. It is an intricate technique, where electronically-processed audio is mixed with mechanically • produced sounds in a specially-composed piece that will be heard constantly in the room • throughout this period. During the concerts, which take place on several occasions, a purely • human level is added when Eva Sidén plays, and relates to, the prepared grand piano as a • physical object. 4/ Helene Hedsund * • "Mellanrum / The space between" 08'21 • The sound material is made from the recording of three musicians, a clarinetist, a saxophonist and a guitarist. All the distinctive instrument sounds have been removed, leaving the sounds from the • musicians and a few very weak instrumental sounds. These small sounds have then been enlarged and made audible. 5/ Sten-Olof Hellström **** • "Sequal I" 07'40 • In SEQUEL Hellström aimed to use digital waveguide synthesis, which is a type of PM where • digital delays are used to emulate the bore of an instrument, for example a saxophone or a clarinet i.e. the space, and media through which sound waves propagate. 6/ Magnus Johansson * • "Send om Sommaren / Late in the summer" 09'35 • Send om sommaren is an algorithmic composition trying to interpret the rules of the Japanese • collaborative poetry form renku in a musical context. On this recording, three computer poets borrow their voices from a recorded flute, processed by • granulation, delays and filters. 7/ Lars Bröndum • "Chain of Events" 11'20 *** • Lars Bröndum: Live electronics, theremin and computer treatments.
