#508. Truus Makes Waves II. Created by Truus de Groot. Between January 31 and February 9, 2024, at WORM studio. My second autobiographical Opera travels from 1991 as I moved to Seattle (from 11 years in New York City) to the present day, 2024 in Escondido, California. The move from NYC to Seattle was a big shift. Leaving the Rock and Roll lifestyle behind I set out to become a normal citizen. Get a steady job, a house maybe? All that was achieved but no Rock and Roll and the lack of performing gnawed at me. No, I was not really great at mainstreaming. Seattle was the absolute opposite of NYC. Grey, dull, rainy, laidback and, well, weird. Then you had the West Coast VS the East Coast attitude. A confusing matter. Where NYC was a place where you could be blunt and honest, in Seattle there was a forced politeness, they would dance around the subject and usually tried to be "nice", even if they didn't mean it. Something to get used to and finding it out took some time. But the coffee was great and it felt safe to walk the streets, unlike NYC. Throughout it all I continued to create music, although not live. Mid 90's I finally found a lively gay scene of artists and like-minded rejects, it was party time again. With the introduction of Cocktails by my close friends Cocktail historian Jeff Berry and NYC bestie Annene Kaye, who both lived in Los Angeles, things started to look up. We would visit each other on occasion so I got a taste of Southern California. The thrift shopping was amazing in Seattle and it became a steady preoccupation finding treasures. As well as finding older drink establishments and architecture. We were the Urban Archeologists! It was all aboard for fun times again. Those two also hooked me up with Tiki artist Bosko. So it was in 1998 that I left Seattle for the Southern Californian sun and started a new life. I became immersed in the Tiki Scene and we created a successful business to sell his Art. I also resumed putting out music. First a trilogy of Exotica music albums to go with the Tiki vibe, then Plus Instruments came back to life again to this day on as well as numerous other collaborations with people worldwide. Water Saus is an audio work by Ash Kilmartin and Lili Huston-Herterich, produced during the development of their collaborative exhibition of the same title. The work began as the sketch of an invented character—a poet who writes in the shower, as a way to compose (in) privacy—but transformed into a journal of writing and making together. The recordings travel across Rotterdam, from one studio to another to home and back again, as the artists chat, eat, piss, sing in the shower, make moulds for soap, and compare playlists and book collections. Lili Huston-Herterich is an American-Canadian artist who runs the project space Available & The Rat in her apartment. Ash Kilmartin is an artist from Aotearoa New Zealand and the founder of a shop called LIFE. They both live in Rotterdam. This is a Radio Worm/Klangendum production. Written by Truus de Groot (aka Geertruda De Groot Hrnjak) 2012. Truus Makes waves. An autobiographical opera by Truus de Groot. About her earliest years in the US. Dealing with the isolation and loneliness through her ongoing often humorous audio observations that she has collected over the years. The piece starts out with Truus reading form her Diary in 1980, shortly before her departure to the US. Just minor observations of a 20 year old, nothing special yet a moment in time. Not really a clue she would be going to the US mere months later, never to call the Netherlands her home again. It was an adventure looking back for her, but at that time these were just impulsive decisions. Never thinking twice, why am I doing this? Is there future here?? What will I do? Her first stop was a connection she made on a whim in Eindhoven, David Linton, who lived in Tribeca, NY. His roommate was Lee Renaldo, who was at that time painting. From there her US journey began. In her isolation she could see the absurd humor of a culture that was so new to her. The many hours spent just looking at people, their silly habits, crazy public fights, moody encounters, make this opera a time capsule of sorts. It also conveys her frustrations of being harassed endlessly by the prying eyes of males that feasted their eyes on a beautiful yet naive young immigrant. However bothersome that might have been, Truus always translated it into humorous musical reflections. It is not dark yet perhaps a bit cynical, but full of irony. It travels from 1979 to up to around 1990's.
