Denis Raisin Dadre and Fred Jacobs
Around All Souls’ Day on Thursday, October 30th, we will be commemorating the recent passing of two musicians in two programmes: conductor and musician Denis Raisin Dadre and lutenist Fred Jacobs.
In Early Delights, we commemorate Denis Raisin Dadre, the French recorder player, musicologist, and founder of the world-famous Renaissance ensemble Doulce Mémoire.
One of his special projects revolved around Anne de Bretagne, Queen of France. At her funeral in 1514, the “Requiem d’Anne de Bretagne” by Antoine de Févin, court composer to Louis XII, was performed. We will be performing this Requiem, naturally performed by Doulce Mémoire, conducted by Denis Raisin Dadre.
Fred Jacobs
In Documento, we will be highlighting the recently deceased Dutch lutenist Fred Jacobs (1961–2025). We’ll hear him solo and as one half of duos with violin and voice.
Jacobs will be heard solo on theorbo, performing works by Robert de Visée from a CD that represents a milestone in De Visée’s recordings of works for theorbo. We’ll also hear excerpts from the CD “For Several Friends,” the debut CD by violinist Lidewij van der Voort and Fred Jacobs as a duo.
We’ll hear 17th-century duets by John Jenkins and Matthew Locke. Interspersed with more solo works (such as improvisations on La Folia) and French Baroque songs by Michel Lambert, which Jacobs performed with the renowned tenor Charles Daniels.
