In memoriam Michael Tilson Thomas – deel 1: De componist • Op 22 april 2026 overleed de Amerikaanse dirigent, pianist en componist en muziekpedagoog Michael Tilson Thomas (door velen vaak afgekort tot MTT) op 81-jarige leeftijd. Het bekendst is hij geworden als dirigent, bijvoorbeeld als chef van het London Symphony Orchestra (1988-1995) en het San Francisco Symphony Orchestra (1995-2020). Als pedagoog kan hij gezien worden als opvolger van Leonard Bernstein. Met diverse projecten, zoals zijn televisieprogramma Keeping Score, maakte Tilson Thomas complexe klassieke muziek begrijpelijk voor een breed en nieuw publiek. In deze aflevering van De Vorige Eeuw concentreren we ons op zijn eigen composities. Dat waren er niet heel veel (zo'n 5 uur muziek in totaal), maar hij was per slot van rekening op de eerste plaats dirigent. U hoort twee liederen van zijn hand, op teksten van de beroemde Amerikaanse dichters Emily Dickinson en Walt Whitman. Daarnaast een compositie voor koperblaaskwintet, getiteld Street Song, en een langer werk voor twee marimba's met de titel Island Music. Volgende maand besteedt dit programma aandacht aan Tilson Thomas als dirigent in enkele 20e-eeuwse Amerikaanse composities.
