The Palace of Nostalgia

thu 11 apr 2024 19:00 hrs

Music from times gone by.

Crooner Kurt Elling and Christian McBride performing ‘Shopping for Clothes’ from the album ‘The Brill Building Project’.

The classic conflict between man and woman on the divisions of the earnings: singer and steel guitarist Cliff Carlisle (‘Pay day fight’).

Obscure Dutch cabaret singer Jaap Dubbelboer (‘Jij bent telkens nieuw voor mij’)

Spring is springing with tenor saxophonist Al Cohn (‘Suddenly it’s Spring’)

and there’s already a touch of summer madness with Julie London (‘Memphis in June’).

We’re treated to a sultry tango by Argentinian singer and bandoneon player Francisco Fiorentina (‘Ficha de oro’).

And a prelude to something that doesn’t (yet) exist: British New Concert Orchestra with ‘Short Overture to an unwritten opera’.

And something that is no more: a lamenting song by Edith Piaf (‘Adieu mon coeur’)

Various vocal highlights: Sarah Vaughan, who was born 100 years ago (‘Come Rain or Come Shine’), Frank Sinatra and the Hollywood String Quartet (‘With Every Breath I Take’ from ‘Close to You’), Doris Day with her revised version of ‘Sentimental Journey’, blues and jazz singer Jeannie Cheatham (”T Ain’t Nobody’s Bizness If I Do’).

Also: Saxophonist Frank Foster and the Frank Wallington Band (‘Bumpkins’), Toon Hermans (‘Kolder liedjes’), The Three Peppers (‘Fuzzy wuzzy’), Earl Bostic (‘Don’t do it please’).
