Over the past four weeks, we have spotlighted the Cuban music form ‘Mambo’ in this programme, today we will sidestep into a music genre known as the ‘bolero’.
The ‘bolero’ is a mix of Spanish and African music. In Puerto Rico, the Spanish influence was the greatest, while in Cuba, the African influence is more prominent.
Cuban travelers brought this music genre with them to Europe and the USA, where the ‘bolero’ became a big success.
This episode will feature various boleristas (performers of the ‘bolero’), such as Myrta Silva (picture), Julito Rodriguez and Graciela. You’ll hear orchestras, duos, trios and quartets.
