Stephen Sondheim ( 1930 – 2021 )
Sonoor: 5th December 16.00 : Homage to Stephen Sondheim
Stephen Sondheim, born in 1930 in New York, passed away on 26th November at the age of 91.
He was the most important musical innovator of the last 50 years. He wrote lyrics and music for some fifteen musicals, none of which was a huge commercial success, but he was the best – the most surprising, smartest, funniest and inventive composer. In the normally highly commercialised world of the musical Sondheim was the master of the non-commercial variant. You could say he wrote musicals for intellectuals. Not for nothing was his nickname “the Shakespeare of the musical”.
In Sonoor we’re playing a selection of his early musicals.
