500 years Josquin

Rebecca Stewart (source: cantusmodalis.org)

In 2021 it was 500 years ago that Josquin Desprez died. This undisputed master of Franco-Flemish polyphony in the 16th century was preoccupied with death. He founded a tradition of writing In Memoriams for colleagues he held in high esteem. He wrote the ‘Nymphes des Bois’ in memory of Johannes Ockeghem. And that trend was followed. For example, a motet attributed to Adriaan Willaert, dedicated to Josquin, has survived.

The singers of Cantus Modalis and Seconda Prat!ca specialize in polyphonic singing from the 16th century. They asked Josquin specialist dr Rebecca Stewart to create a program with Josquin’s most beautiful In Memoriams. But Stewart and the singers also took the Willaert motet and reconstructed the missing three upper voices. The highlight of this concert is this In Memoriam for Josquin Desprez, in all its seven-part glory.

Abbenes plays Bach

Arie Abbenes plays the carillon of the Domtoren Utrecht (29 Oct. ’21)

The former Utrecht carillonneur Arie Abbenes plays Bach on the carillon of the Domtoren in Utrecht. This performance took place as part of the thousandth broadcast of No day without Bach on October 29th, 2021.

Abbenes played all his own arrangements of compositions by Johann Sebastian Bach. We hear the tune of No day without Bach (the beginning of harpsichord concerto BWV 1052), two cello suites, Bach’s arrangement of a concerto by Marcello and the sinfonia of cantata BWV 21.
