A second chance for Hummel, part XXVI

The next episode of the series by Thijs Bonger about Johann Nepomuk Hummel is broadcast on Tuesday 7 February at 19:00 CET.

Johann Nepomuk Hummel (1778-1837) is now Kapellmeister for the court in Weimar. His contract allows his to travel for 3 months of the year to play concerts.  In 1822 he organises a very succesful tour to Russia. In Moscow he meets the legendary pianist John Field, the originator of the nocturne, and an important inspirator for Chopin. He also meets a virtuoso oboist and adapts one of his compositions for him. While is Russia, he writes a romantic, Slavic-sounding rondo for piano and orchestra for a Russian princess and in Riga he performs organ improvisations. After his return he continues to compose music that is inspired by Russia.
