A trip to Electric Ladyland

sun 19 sep 2021

Thema: Wednesday 22 September 20:00 CET.

The pioneers of electronic music were not only boring, brooding men in white coats. In the 1960s and 1970s, idiosyncratic female composers such as Maryanne Amacher, Éliane Radigue, Laurie Spiegel and Pauline Oliveros also created new and unprecedented electronic soundscapes. This year Lisa Rovner’s documentary Sisters with Transistors (2020) will finally be screened in the Netherlands. The film is a cinematic tribute to these female pioneers of electronic music. They produced groundbreaking music that continues to inspire younger generations of musicians.

This Thema broadcast is a two-hour tribute to these pioneering sisters with transistors. The programme ends with a new work by the Dutch composer Thomas Ankersmit. Ankersmit, who lives in Berlin, is extremely adept with the Serge Modular synthesizer. His latest composition for this synthesizer, entitled Perceptual Geography, is dedicated to colleague and friend Maryanne Amacher.
