Mariama 8:00 PM
Concertzender Live 10:00 PM
This evening broadcast features a variety of wonderful world music programs. This time, with a fair amount of music from Africa. The key word is: danceable.
Mariama features music from the 1970s and 1980s by the African System Orchestra. This band, primarily made up of musicians from Cameroon, operated from Eastern Nigeria. A successful record label was based there, attracting musicians from various regions, including Congo and Cameroon. African System Orchestra embraced the Eastern Nigerian Highlife style and the singing and guitar playing of the Congolese people of that era in their music.
Concertzender Live also features African music. You’ll hear our recording of the Rabasa concert, performed earlier this year at Quibus, the X in Leiden. Founded by two Cape Verdean brothers and featuring musicians of various nationalities, Rabasa operates out of Rotterdam. They play Cape Verdean music with a distinctive sound – full and warm – featuring danceable coladeiras and funanás, and of course, the melancholic morna.
