An Ox on the Roof

thu 28 nov 2019

Part 9 of An Ox on the Roof on Sunday 1 December at 12:00 CET is again about Degenerate Music. This series by Thea Derks is loosely based on her book Een os op het dak: moderne muziek na 1900 in vogelvlucht, an introduction to modern music written in everyday language.

Unlike many of his colleagues, the Czech-Jewish composer Erwin Schulhoff (1894-1942) did not flee to America and remained in Europe. In 1929 he completed his opera Flammen, which was inspired by the figure of Don Juan. However, the première in Berlin was cancelled for political and racist reasons and the first performance did not take place until 1932 in Prague. This is the second of the three programmes in which Flammen  is being broadcast.
