On Sunday 2 February at 12.00 CET you can listen to the 11th episode of the series An Ox on the Roof by Thea Derks. This series is loosely based on her book Een os op het dak: moderne muziek na 1900 in vogelvlucht, an introduction to contemporay music written in everyday language.
Leo Theremin [see photo] invented his electronic instrument in 1919. However, the 100th anniversary is being celebrated this year. Famous Theremin players from the past, in addition to the inventor himself, include Clara Rockmore and Lucie Bigelow Rosen. After a brief period of success, the instrument fell into disuse but has been undergoing something of a revival in the last few decades, partly as a result of the musicians Lydia Kavina and Thorwald Jørgensen.
