February 2026 marks the centenary of Black History Month. Black History Month is a manifestation of Black cultural awareness that began in the US, spread to England, and is now celebrated worldwide. Forty years ago, the very first edition of the magazine Afrika, dedicated entirely to African music and Black culture, was published in Amsterdam. That was during a period of globalisation, in which curiosity about world music grew and African pop experienced an unprecedented boom in the West.
As a contribution to Black History Month, Ritmundo presents two programmes, an ode to the music that, at that time, opened the world to new sounds and cultural connections.
The first of these programmes was broadcast on Friday 27 February at 20:00 CET. Click here to listen to the programme.
