Brazil is a land that is as big as a continent and its development has been influenced by many different countries. Brazilian music offers insights into most (but not all) of the important characteristics of the various regions of the country. For example, the music from the northern part of Brazil is a fusion of Caribbean rhythms and native traditions. In contrast, the music from the north-east of the country has African origins.  The strong influence of Latin-American in the music from the south can still be heard in the more internationally-oriented music made there today.

The first programme in the series looks at contemporary ‘independent’ music.
