In World Music Club, a delightful hour of Fado, the world-famous traditional music from Portugal, full of melancholy, longing, and passion. A contemporary hour, too, as most of the music was released in 2025.
Fado as a genre is like a beautiful old costume that can be worn again and again, allowing each new generation to wear it with gusto. This is evident tonight. Cuca Roseta is one of today’s leading fadistas, and combines the fado tradition with an unmistakably modern flair in her music. Gisela João is also breathing new life into the genre with her raw emotion and intense, captivating performances.
The list goes on and includes singers who, immediately before this current generation, managed to keep fado fresh in their own way, such as Bosnian Maja Milinkovic and Aldina Duarte. The older generation is also featured, with Manuel Cardoso de Menezes (born 1939), who, with his husky, sensitive voice, has had a long career in fado.
