In memoriam George Crumb

wed 9 feb 2022

On 6th February one of the greatest American composers, George Crumb, died at the age of 92.

He was of the same generation as Stockhausen and Boulez but went his own way. He transformed his fascination for unusual playing techniques and instruments into an idiom full of striking beauty. An exception to this is his piece Black Angels, a string quartet written as a protest against the Vietnam War. The piece is sometimes so frightening it would not be out of place as the soundtrack for the film “the Exorcist” .

On Monday 14th February at 1900 we’ll be playing a number of his works in our programme Bijdetijds .
