Introducing Irving Schlein

tue 8 apr 2014

The Previous Century starts a new series on 8 April dedicated to the work of Irving Schlein. This Jewish-American composer was born on 18 August 1905 into a poor Polish-Ukrainian immigrant family in the ‘borshcht-belt’, the Lower East Side of Manhattan.

Schlein worked on Broadway together with people such as Cole Porter and Kurt Weill, but he also created his own classical repertoire. Thanks to his son Peter Schlein many of his works were recorded in St Peterburg between 2001-2008 and have been released on CD. We will be playing a selection of these recordings in the coming months.
