Together with the NTR and NPO 2 Extra, the Dutch Jazz Archive has produced no fewer than six new episodes in our Jazz Portraits series, which now has 104 episodes. They can all be found together on Jazzhelden.nl
The six new episodes focus on: singer Edwin Rutten, flutist Chris Hinze, saxophonist-programme maker Vera Vingerhoeds, bassist Wim Essed, pianist Tony Roe (winner of the Boy Edgar Prize 2024) and guitarist Martijn van Iterson.
In each of these Jazz Portraits, director Jan Kelder talks to the main character. A conversation about musicianship, career and motivations ensues, which is generously enriched with archive material. Wonderful “slow television” that is very rare in 2024. With Jazz Portraits, the story of Dutch jazz is told by the main characters: the musicians themselves.
For the production of Jazz Portraits, the NJA works closely with Allard Pierson and the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision.
The six new episodes premiered in December 2024 on NPO 2 Extra, the channel for art, culture, documentaries, music, film, literature, theatre and dance: non-stop on TV and online.
From now on they will also be programmed on regular TV, the familiar NPO2!
