Absolute mastery

No broadcast date yet planned for this concert.

‘Absolute mastery!’ wrote Trouw in a 5 star review of a recital by Marc-André Hamelin in the Muziekgebouw. In 2015-2016 this Canadian pianist was artist in residence and surprised with interesting progammes. That’s what he’s also doing in this return to that hall, where he loves to play. This evening music by Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco and Alexis Weissenberg as well as much-loved works by Schubert, Fauré and Chopin.

The New York Times praises the way in which Marc-André Hamelin brings to life less well-known but important piano repertoire . In the 50’s the record Mr. Nobody Plays Trenet with songs by balladeer Charles Trenet appeared. Ten years ago it was discovered that this was a recording by Alexis Weissenberg , a legendary 20th century pianist. Hamelin has notated the cool, jazzy arrangements by Weissenberg to bring them out of neglect.
