Pocket Concerts (19) – Wolfert Brederode & Ella Zirina
Dutch jazz pianist Wolfert Brederode has been one of the most distinctive voices on the contemporary European jazz scene for decades. He graduated with honours from the Royal Conservatory in The Hague and has since released several acclaimed albums on the prestigious ECM Records label, including Currents, Post Scriptum, Black Ice, and most recently Ruins and Remains, for which he won an Edison Jazz Prize. Brederode’s rich and inventive playing has also led to collaborations with international artists such as Susanne Abbuehl, Yuri Honing and Arve Henriksen. He performs extensively throughout Europe and beyond.
The rising guitarist Ella Zirina combines lyrical melodies with expressive improvisations. Ella was born in Latvia and, after graduating with highest honors in Amsterdam, she has quickly established herself as a leading voice in modern jazz, with several albums to her nam, including her Edison-nominated debut Intertwined and the recent Boundless Blue, Sunset Hue. She has performanced at major festivals such as North Sea Jazz. Together, Brederode and Zirina form a sensitive and spontaneous duo, in which piano and guitar merge into moments of subtle interplay and deep musical connection.
