Pocket Concerts (6) with Raquel Kurpershoek
Raquel Kurpershoek-Jaldón (born 1998, Amsterdam) is a Dutch-Spanish singer and composer. She studied Latin American music at the Rotterdam Conservatory Codarts, where she explored flamenco and Latin music, combining these and other traditions in her own compositions. In 2016, she won the Princess Christina Jazz Competition and the Zoetermeer Jazz Competition. In 2022, she received three international awards at the AndreaParodiWorld Music Festival in Italy. She recently received the Premio Nacional de Cultura de España, one of the highest recognitions for cultural impact in Spain.
With guitarist Alejandro Hurtado and percussionist Danny Rombout, Raquel created the album NIZAMI (inspired by the poetry of Nizami Ganjavi), featuring poetic stories in various musical styles. She also explored sign language and the experience of music by deaf people. She made a documentary about it (Traslasierra), which she regularly shows at concerts. In it, she demonstrates how music can also be felt—through vibration sensors on the body. In this way, she connects flamenco with deaf culture and shows that music is more than just sound: it is emotion and expression, for everyone.
In this video, recorded at the worldofjazz.nl editorial office, Raquel plays with pianist Fran Rodríguez, bassist Mauro Méndez, and Danny Rombout on percussion.
