The Night: Special

sun 18 jan 2009 00:00 hour

The American Soundgerm Collection; part 1.
The first hour: DON CAMPAU/ROBIN O’BRIEN.
The second and third hour: CHARLIE GOFF III.
The fourth and fifth hour: HAL MCGEE.
The sixth hour: MIRANDETTE POPULAR.

The first hour: DON CAMPAU/ROBIN O’BRIEN.
Don Campau (1952): composer, musician (of the legendary band The Desmonds, to name one) and radio host of the (very) long-running programme NO PIGEONHOLES (San Francisco). Robin O’Brien (1958): active as singer/songwriter since the seventies. This composers’ couple lives in Santa Rosa, California. Don Campau is predominantly occupied with experimental guitar and tape improvisations while Robin O’Brien is into making more traditional folk music in the singer/songwriter atmosphere. In the first hour of this night you will hear a mix of both styles and we pay attention to the CDs released with Lonely Whistle Music: "Wreck a Lilac" and "Lowercase Freud" by Don Campau; "The Saffron Sky"; "Ilsanjo" and "Home Flag" by Robin O’Brien. www.lonelywhistle.tripod.com
The second and third hour: CHARLIE GOFF III.
For 25 years, the American musical clown Charles Goff Rice III has been spreading his sound manipulations across the world via his own label Taped Rugs Productions. Topical text collages critical of the social structure, vocal distortion and playful – hinting at childish – melodic lines form the ingredients of Goff’s music. Chaotic sounds as a reflection of an insane society. His compositions/improvisations have the naive character of, for example, The Residents on the one hand, but on the other hand it radiates complexity as can be heard with Zappa. Goff’s alienating music and lyrics are above all humourous, which will be heard abundantly clearly in the third hour of this series.

The fourth and fifth hour: HAL MCGEE.
Hal McGee has been active in the world of industrial, experimental and electronic music ever since 1980. In his initial period, he worked together with Debbie Jaffe. Together they are known under the name of Viscera. Solo, McGee presents himself as Dog As Master. From 1984 to 1987, McGee and Jaffe function as a conduit for the global network of music cassettes. During this period, their Cause And Effect International Distribution Service spreads over 5,000 tapes on which mainly homemade experimental music is produced. This service is continued in 1989 with the magazine Electronic Cottage. The main topic here is again homemade music. From the nineties to now, Hal McGee has produced over 150 albums. The majority is filled with sound experiments wrapped in full-length compositions and sound collages. In doing that, McGee has collaborated with musicians such as Chris Phinney, Dave Fuglewicz, Charles Rice Goff III, Andrew Chadwick, Al Margolis, Brian Noring, Phil Klampe, Big City Orchestra, Marcel Herms and Jeph Jerman.
The fourth hour of this night centres around four CDs from the enormous volume. The solo CD "My Brain", "Verve of the Void" – a collaboration with Charles Goff Rice III – "Hoax", made in collaboration with Don Campau, and "Synergistic Deconstruction" on which McGee collaborates with Dave Fluglewicz. When necessary, you can use the attached websites to retrace all online compositions, background information and lists with releases.

The sixth hour: MIRANDETTE POPULAR.
The teeny record label Mirandette Popular is run by the American Mike Mangino. Since the beginning of the eighties, Mike forms the group SMERSH, together with Chris Shepard. The duo excels at lo-fi punk and minimalist madness. Through music cassettes they spread their musical concoctions and end up coming into contact with other like-minded musicians. A long-standing collaboration with the German lo-fi lounge musician is a fact. All sorts of exchange projects are created which again lead to new group names such as TWILL.
In this programme, we pay attention to a few CDR releases that are available through Mirandette Popular.
In a flowing mix you hear fragments of the CDs "Granny Fairplay", "The Perfect Collection" Vol.1, "Ghostly Bus", "Nincompoops", "Una Mas", "Action Mood 120", and "Mystery too Close to See". For more information go to http://hometown.aol.com/mirandettepop/mpoppage.htm
