Jazz, blues and nostalgia, by Sjaak Roodenburg.
We delve deep into musical history, with once world famous interpreter of Yiddish song, Rotterdam’s own Leo Fuld. Also, the melancholic orchestra of Hans Carste, who took the baton from Jewish bandleader Ludwig Rüth in 1937, who had fled to South-Africa. But Carste ended up at the Eastern front as a Nazi and was arrested by the Red Army. Furthermore: Frank Sinatra fretting in the studio on his album ‘A Swingin’ Affair’, the orchestra of Sam Lanin with a song that provided comfort in the dark days of the Crash, forgotten Dutch singer Bruce Low wit a German Westernsong, supercool trumpet player Dick Collins, Stan Kenton, Nelson Riddle with the tune of The Dick Van Dyke Show, guitar player Merle Travis (known for his ‘Travis Picking’), a playful duet of violinists Svend Asmussen and Stuff Smith. Also some time on ‘amuseur’ Henk Elsink, who has passed away, in a touching song about his father and a performance with Wim Sonneveld, and Carla Lipp, wig maker Jet from vintage Dutch children’s programme ‘Ja Zuster, Nee Zuster,’ who sings about the perks of sharing a lover with co-star Hetty Blok.
