De barokke geest in al zijn muzikale vormen. We horen vandaag muziek van vier Engelse componisten uit de late barok, zo ongeveer de eerste helft van de achttiende eeuw. Vanwege dodenherdenking is dit programma gewijd aan muziek die voor begrafenissen is gecomponeerd. U hoort werken van William Croft en František Ignác Antonín Tuma. Het eerste werk is 'The Burial Service' van William Croft. De tijd en gelegenheid van de compositie is niet bekend. Opvallend is dat Croft de anthem van zijn leermeester Purcell, 'Thou knowest, Lord, the secrets of our heart', in zijn werk opnam, omdat hij meende het niet te kunnen verbeteren. Het grootste werk in dit uur is de 'Missa della morte' van František Ignác Antonín Tuma. Hij was afkomstig uit Bohemen, maar werkte de langste tijd van zijn leven in Wenen. Toen in 1742 het lichaam van keizer Karel VI naar een sarcofaag in Wenen werd overgebracht, klonk dit Requiem voor de eerste keer. In 1750 werd het nogmaals uitgevoerd, nu bij de begrafenis van Karels weduwe, Elisabeth-Christine van Brunswijk-Wolfenbüttel. William Croft (1678-1727) • 1. Vanwege de kroning van Charles III op 6 mei 2023 is dit programma gewijd aan Engelse muziek die gerelateerd is aan de Britse monarchie. Het eerste werk is een zogenaamde 'Welcome Song' van Henry Purcell, die werd uitgevoerd in 1683, toen Charles II na de zomer in Londen terugkeerde. Als tweede werk horen we een anthem, die William Croft componeerde voor de kroning van George I in 1714. Na diens overlijden in 1727 werd zijn enige zoon tot George II gekroond. Bij die gelegenheid werden vier 'Coronation Anthems' van Georg Friedrich Händel uitgevoerd. Daarvan horen we er drie. Henry Purcell (1659-1695) • 1.
