Radio Around the Globe on Thursday 3 November at 18.00 CET looks at  ‘Agaat’,  a novel by the South African writer Marlene van Niekerk. The book was first published a couple of years ago, but was recently reissued to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the publisher, Uitgeverij Querido.

The book is about Milla, an elderly white woman with ALS, and her black nurse Agaat. The story takes place on a farm in South Africa that is named Grootmoedersdrift after an illustrious great-grandmother.  It is  large farm with lots of land for the cattle and the crops and for the black workers who also live there. It is the period of Apartheid in South Africa.
