Cd-en book presentation Doris Hocheid, cello – Frans van Ruth, piano
‘In search of cellist-composer: Daniel van Goens’ – born in Leiden in 1858 – is a project of the Cello Sonata Netherlands Foundation. After years of research into this Van Goens, the foundation will release a CD with his works for cello and piano in 2025. In addition, a biography about him will be published and the foundation will present a podcast in collaboration with the Concertzender.
In the cello world, ‘Van Goens’s Scherzo’ is a well-known concept. You come across it everywhere: at conservatories, during competitions, on CDs with cello showpieces. But who is this Van Goens actually?
In 2009, Doris Hochscheid and Frans van Ruth recorded three works by Vab Goens for Dutch Cello Sonatas Vol. 2. Until then, virtually nothing was known about him. Where did he come from, what else had he composed? It is fascinating that he has been a household name in the international cello world for over a hundred years, without anyone ever having thoroughly researched the rest of his compositions or information about his life.
Van Goen’s music can be described as salon music. While this is a term that has a negative connotation these days, in our opinion this music should absolutely be taken seriously. It was the genre in which composers expressed themselves in nineteenth-century Paris. In those days, salons were the place where like-minded people found each other and talked to each other. Chopin and Liszt also performed in such salons and owed their fame to these performances. Composers such as Fauré, Saint-Saëns, Chausson and many others, including Van Goens, wrote songs and short compositions in this genre at the start of their careers. It was the most common way to gain fame and to present yourself as a musician and composer.
