Sun-Mi Hong Quintet
On Saturday 14 November, 14:00 CET, you can listen to our recording of the Walk The Line concert in TivoliVredenburg by the Sun-Mi Hong Quintet.
Sun-Mi Hong (30) comes from South Korea and has been captivated by percussion since she was 12 years old. Her dream to play the drums herself was blocked for years by her traditional parents who wanted only hard study, a well-paid job and a family for her. It was not until she was seventeen that she was able to start taking drum lessons, and four years later the big leap to the Conservatorium van Amsterdam followed. Progress is then rapid: Bachelor, Master, her own Trio, an award, a debut album, a performance at North Sea Jazz and participation in the Young VIPs Tour. A second album follows, now with the Sun-Mi Hong Quintet, and the concert schedule fills up.
Her style is described on her website as “sitting on the periphery of tradition while often dipping her toes into the avant-garde”. In her compositions she interweaves – also as a conscious selling point – Korean percussion instruments and melodies.
In addition to our broadcast, the Sun-Mi Hong Quintet can also be seen and heard on the Livestream of the Amersfoort Jazz ONLINE Festival on Sunday, November 22 from 16:30 – 17:45 CET. If all goes well, the Sun-Mi Hong Quintet will play in TivoliVredenburg on December 12.
