The Concertzender presents : podcast Scherzo ?

thu 1 may 2025
Doris Hochscheid and Frans van Ruth bring forgotten composer Daniël van Goens back to life.
Why does one composer become world famous and another forgotten? In the three-part podcast Scherzo?, Mattijs van de Woerd and Manon Schreurs follow cellist Doris Hochscheid and pianist Frans van Ruth, who have been searching for traces of the forgotten Dutch composer Daniel van Goens (1858 -1904) for 16 years. What starts with a small, playful cello piece: the “Scherzo”, develops into a journey through archives, family letters, metro stations and cemeteries.
Scherzo? is a three-part podcast series. A musical road movie in which music history, personal fascination and amateur detective work come together. What drives two musicians to search for sixteen years for a man about whom hardly anything can be found? And what do they discover along the way about the meaning of music, friendship, family and memory?
The series was conceived and written by Manon Schreurs and Mattijs van de Woerd, and produced by Waagstuk, in collaboration with Concertzender.
Scherzo? is the introduction to the Van Goens biography, written by Frans van Ruth and the ninth CD in the Dutch Cello Sonatas series, entirely dedicated to Daniel van Goens.

Scherzo? can be listened to weekly from 26 April via all major podcast platforms and via On Demand on this site.

The official release, the presentation concert of the book and CD is on 11th May at 16:00 in the Pauluskerk in Oegstgeest. The CD and the book will be offered there to Van Goens’ family members that we ‘found’ during our search. In that concert we will play music by Van Goens and contemporaries such as Ravel, Fauré, Debussy, but also Grieg and Rachmaninov. Afterwards there will be snacks and drinks for everyone!
