The Rileys conquer Vredenburg : Concertzende Live, 20/02 at 20.00

tue 14 feb 2017

A unique sighting: father and son Riley together. On 20th September 2016 there was a remarkable concert by the American composer and minimalist Terry Riley in the Utrecht music complex TivoliVredenburg.

The 81 year old Riley, together with his 40 year younger son virtuoso guitarist/composer Gyan Riley, gave a brilliant performance full of new interpretations of classic Riley works such as ‘G-Song’, ‘Songs from the Old Country’ and ‘Salome Dances for Peace’. Colourful improvisations with jazz and world music influences in which the Rileys in a refreshing way brought up the  minimalist habits and left them behind. Several works were played for the first time in Europe including the Terry Riley première ‘Cannabis’. A disarming ode to the psychedelic sixties. Terry Riley plays the piano and sings, while son Gyan plays electric and acoustic guitars. The Concertzender was there and recorded the whole performance in the Hertz Kamermuziek hall.
