In the multistreamed world of minimalism, rock and jazz you can find the American composer Marc Mellits (1966). Exceptionally eclectic music full of strong rhythms tumbling over each other, colourful instrumentation and enchanting melodies. Mellits excels in succint, physical pieces in which he builds up his own sound world full of film-like scenes. Maximal music which has been performed by the Kronos Quartet, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and the Bang on a Can All Stars. Mellits also has his own band, the Mellits Consort. In this Thema episode a look at his work, many played by his Mellits Consort and recently published string quartets.
