Bach and the storm

tue 1 feb 2022
Theme: Early Music

In the week of 31st January  to 4th February in Bach ad Infinitum we’ll be playing cantatas for the 4th Sunday after Trinity and for Maria’s Light Mass. The week starts with cantata BWV 81 telling the story of Jesus calming the storm.

Bach ad Infinitum on Monday 31st January begins with cantata “Jesus schläft, was soll ich hoffen?” BWV 81. This cantata follows closely the biblical story of Jesus calming the  storm. Very appropriate for a day when storm Corrie passes over the Netherlands.
We’re also playing instrumental works by Bach, including the 5th French Suite by Julien Libeer, and a violin sonata played on the viola da gamba.

On Tuesday 1st February we’re playing the choral cantata “Wär Gott nicht mit uns diese Zeit” BWV 14 which also lightly refers to the same bible story. The rest of the week we’re playing cantatas for Maria’s Mass of Light (2nd February) and various instrumental works by Bach.
