Concert recordings of Tasto Solo and Los Músicos de Su Alteza

thu 6 feb 2014
Theme: Early Music

On Sunday 9 February (15.00-17.00) we continue the broadcasts of
concerts from the Early Music Festival 2013 in Utrecht
with the concerts by Tasto Solo and Los Músicos de Su Alteza.

Keyboard adaptations

In their programme Tasto Solo approaches Ciconia’s music from a purely instrumental angle. We hear music by Ciconia, as well as music by contemporaries like Binchois, Dufay and Dunstaple in original versions and also in adaptations in the spirit of the keyboard masters of the 15th century.

The ballad “Con lagreme bagnandome el viso” occupies centre stage during the concert. This sad lamentation was written by Ciconia for Franceco Carrara, lord of Padua, who was executed by Venetian soldiers in 1406.

Decades later German keyboard players excelled in adapting this music for instrumental performances.

The musicians of Tasto Solo let us hear those adaptations on medieval keyboard instruments like the organetto and two types of clavicymbalum, one with hammers and one with plectrums.

The Peace of Utrecht in Spain

Los Músicos de Su Alteza let us hear Spanish music from the time of The Peace of Utrecht in 1713. This peace agreement settled the succession of the Spanish Throne and in doing so reestablished the European equilibrium. Spanish composers as Durón van Valls had an awkward time, they would rather have seen the Austrians on the throne than the grandson of Louis XIV. Other composers like De Torres, Literes and De Nebra had a successful career under the Bourbons.
