Madrigaalkunst about Caravaggio

tue 11 feb 2020
Theme: Early Music

On Friday 14th February we’re broadcasting a concert recording from the Early Music Festival 2019: ‘Madrigaalkunst about Caravaggio’ by Urgent Music and the Spanish soprano Nuria Rial. We’re also playing a recording from 2013, from a homage to the renaissance composer Salomone Rossi by Profeti della Quinta.

Caravaggio is the most famous early Baroque Italian painter. For a while around 1600 he lived and worked in Naples. Baroque violinist Veronika Skuplik, her ensemble Urgent Music and Nuria Rial are presenting a programme about this great master with madrigals and instrumental music from d’India, Trabaci, Strozzi and Falconieri.

Salomone Rossi
The composer Salomone Rossi from Mantua wrote both temporal and spiritual music but the emphasis was on the temporal. As well as his famous collection of psalms and Hebrew prayers he published no less than four books of instrumental music and nine of Italian temporal works, including madrigals, canzonettas, ballets and madrigals.
The five singers and three musicians of Profeti della Quinta, led by Elam Rotem, play a two parter with these two musical styles of Salomone Rossi.
