Wereldmuziek, verzameld en uitgezocht door Pieter de Rooij: Jonatha Brooke
Jonatha Brooke is een singer/songwriter, geboren in 1964 in Illinois, Verenigde Staten en daar tegenwoordig woonachtig in Minneapolis/Minnesota. Zij is geen grote beroemdheid, maar heeft zowel in de Verenigde Staten als in het buitenland een grote schare trouwe fans en ook de internationale muziekjournalistiek slaat haar muziek zeer hoog aan.
Jonatha Brooke begon haar carrière in de jaren 80 van de 20e eeuw met de band The Story, waarin zij samen met Jennifer Kimball een zangduo vormde. In 1994 begon Jonatha Brooke een solocarrière en sindsdien heeft zij 10 albums uitgebracht – twee daarvan komen aan bod in deze uitzending: haar veelgeprezen fraaie debuutalbum ‘Plumb’ uit 1995, waarop zij vooral zingt over verbroken relaties en liefdesverdriet, en het in 2008 verschenen album ‘The Works’, dat op een bijzondere manier tot stand kwam. Jonatha Brooke kreeg de gelegenheid om in het familie-archief te duiken van de legendarische Amerikaanse folksinger Woody Guthrie en zij stuitte in dat archief op prachtige, totdantoe onbekende teksten van de linkse, sociaal bewogen zanger: maatschappijkritische geëngageerde teksten, maar ook zeer persoonlijke teksten over liefde en intimiteit. In interviews vertelde Jonatha Brooke dat zij op slag verliefd werd op deze teksten van Woody Guthrie en zij besloot een aantal ervan op muziek te zetten. Dat resulteerde in het album ‘The Works’, waarop Jonatha Brooke het beste uit zichzelf en uit die teksten van Guthrie weet te halen, daarbij begeleid en bijgestaan door beroemdheden uit de pop-, jazz- en blueswereld, waaronder drummer Steve Gadd, toetsenist/pianist Joe Sample, bassist Christian McBride en zanger Keb Mo.
De muziek van Jonatha Brooke is een mix van folk, rock, jazz en pop, en in haar composities en in haar zang maakt zij volop gebruik van complexe harmonieën en eigenzinnige, verrassende melodielijnen. Leuk weetje: Jonatha Brooke schreef muziek voor drie Disney-films en ook in de tv-series ‘Buffy The Vampire Slayer’ en ‘Allie McBeal’ is muziek van haar te horen, in ‘Allie McBeal’ haar lied ‘Landmine’ en in ‘Buffy The Vampire Slayer’ Jonatha’s ultieme liefdesverdriet-lied ‘Inconsolable’.
