Rewire is taking place from April 7th to 10th in Den Hague and is one of the best European Festivals for adventurous contemporary music.
For four days Rewire’s 11th edition will present a range of leading contemporary artists. The widely programmed line-up consists of many concerts, interdisciplinary performances, club-nights, sound installations, lectures and video shows.
You can find complete information about the Festival on its website www.rewirefestival.nl
The Concertzender will as usual be present at a number of concerts. The Crosslinks editors always selects some artists who stand out in the new generation of music makers.
This year we will be making recordings in the Lutheran Church and in the Koorenhuis. These are the artists we will be recording:
Friday 8th April in de Lutheran Church
Sofie Birch & Johan Carøe and Claire Rousay + ensemble.
Sofie Birch & Johan Carøe issued their album Repair Techniques in 2021 via the Belgian label Stroom. The basis recording for their album was made in Copenhagen and arranged in Andersabo in Sweden. Andersabo is a breeding ground for Scandinavian experimental music. Musicians from Scandinavia can work there as residents on their ideas in the field of boundary extending music and share their self-creations with other sound artists. On the record Sofie Birch & Johan Carøe use both acoustic and electronic instruments. Birch plays organ, cello and synths and Carøe clarinet, guitar and synths.
Listen to 230 Volt van maandag 23 augustus 2021 for two numbers from the album Repair Techniques by Sofie Birch & Johan Carøe.
Claire Rousay comes from San Antonio, Texas. Rousay builds soundscapes by using everyday sounds which escape our attention. During Rewire she’ll be working with a small ensemble and playing music from her forthcoming album Everything Perfect Is Already Here.
Listen to Dr. Klangendum van maandag 6 december 2021 for Sometimes I Feel Like I Have No Friends van Claire Rousay.
Saturday 9th April in the Koorenhuis
Mathijs Leeuwis. On Sunday 10th April Rewire is organising its second minimalist concert. This running afternoon concert in the Koorenhuis is by composer and pedal steel guitarist Mathijs Leeuwis (1985) and is part of the Rewire outreach programme, a programme developed to clear the way for visitors to the festival. Leeuwis came to the fore in 2018 with his GALIBIER, which is why we’re recording this concert on Saturday 9th April. Guitarist, composer and sound explorer Mathijs Leeuwis transforms the sound of his analogue instruments into evocative tape-loop based works, continually looking for new sounds and methods of composing. During this concert Leeuwis will be playing with the Dutch guitarist Marzio Scholten, Mathijn den Duijf on electronics, Reggy van Bakel on percussion/electronics and vocalist Theo Decloedt. Artist Janine Hendriks will supply visuals.
Listen to Electronic Frequencies van maandag 10 mei 2021 for Mathijs Leeuwis with Deconstruction II.
Sunday 10th April in the Koorenhuis
Gagi Petrovic, Bitchin Bajas en Carl Gari & Abdullah Miniawy.
Gagi Petrovic. The Haarlem resident Petrovic is composer, performer, producer and music teacher. As conceptual composer Petrovic sits between the worlds of contemporary new music, electronic music and alternative pop music. During Rewire Petrovic will present two of his works, in which he makes use of his own GEST. It’s a system in which he makes music through hand gestures and light sensors, which he will use to perform his moving piece Choosing Freedom . It’s an abstract work free of expectations and runs via improvisation. His second piece is the more conventional Vox Populi.
Listen to De Nacht: Hedendaags van donderdag 10 februari 2022 for the album Choosing Freedom by Gagi Petrovic.
Bitchin Bajas. The American trio Bitchin Bajas explore the hypnotic effect of atmospheric sound waves. Vintage synthesizers, drum computers and vocoders create the sound palette. In this way cosmic jazz and synthesizer music are transformed into Afrofuturistic and stratospheric mantras. The last album by the trio Bitchin Bajas is called Switched On Ra. The album is a tribute to Sun Ra, because in the music of Cooper Crain, Rob Frye and Daniel Quinlivan Sun Ra’s influence is obvious .
Listen to Electronic Frequencies van woensdag 6 April 2016 to You will soon discover how truly fortunate you are by Bitchin Bajas & Bonnie Prince Billy.
Carl Gari & Abdullah Miniawy. The German trio Carl Gari, together with the Egyptian singer and trumpeter Abdullah Miniawy, expresses the sound of modern Egypt. Over a background of atmospheric dance music Miniawy sings Arabic lyrics, which originate from the poem ‘B’aj بعاج’. A poem whose leading character jumps from the eighth floor, which expresses the decline of Egyptian society under the regime of Al-Sisi .
Listen to X-Rated van zondag 1 september 2019 to Carl Gari & Abdullah Miniawy met The Act Of Falling From The 8th Floor.
