Saturday July 15th, 2023, 5:00 PM – House of Hard Bop.
Founded in 1965, the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra grew into an innovative and influential big band in the jazz world. One of its distinguishing qualities is the composition and especially the arranging work of trumpeter/orchestral leader Thad Jones. And one of his trumps is the prolonged silence of the horns, as well as the rhythm section, so that a soloist has to manage on his own for a while. That can also happen to the pianist and the bass player. It is an important variation factor in the design, and exciting for the listener/viewer. Also fascinating to watch (YouTube): the dynamic mobility of Thad Jones as a conductor – a position from which he also solos. Live at the Village Vanguard was recorded at home base in 1967. Successively: A-That’s Freedom, Bachafillen, Don’t Git Sassy, Willow Tree, Samba Con Getchu and Quietude.
The program closes with two pieces from Monday Night, Recorded Live at the Village Vanguard (1968): Mornin’ Reverend and the Second Race.
