Saturday June 15th, 5:00 PM – House of Hard Bop.
Vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson and tenorist Harold Land (photo) were frontmen in the recording studios of Blue Note Records and Mainstream Records in the 1960s and early 1970s. In this hour you will hear some pieces from Hutcherson’s album Medina (released 1980), and from the 1971 record A New Shade of Blue. The latter title is in the name of Harold Land. Land also makes himself heard on the flute. No music with major/minor tonalities, chord progressions and traditional forms. Instead, modal series and harmonies, within tightly organized shapes that vary per piece. Strong mutual cohesion in the group. Each composition has its own mood and pace.
