Le Grand Rouge
Olivier Durif (viool), Pierre Imbert (draailier), Eric Montbel (chabreta, doedelzak uit de Limousin), Christian Oller (diatonische accordeon).
In 1980 hield Le Grand Rouge op te bestaan, en 3 van de leden gingen verder in de groep Lo Jai.
Lid van dit ensemble was de draailierspeler Pierre Imbert, die later emigreerde naar Vancouver, daar trouwde en op 15 aug. 2001 aan een hartinfarct overleed. Hij was 47 jaar. In Canada was hij oprichter van het ensemble "Cord’en folies". Ik was hem vlak voor zijn overlijden tegengekomen en beloofde hem de Theater aan de Haven opnames van Le Grand Rouge te digitaliseren en aan hem op te sturen. Het is er niet meer van gekomen.

Performed by khomus quartet Algus. Khomus or kubyz is the name of the Jew’s harp in Sacha / Yakutia.
Quite a few khomus ensembles give public concerts. The best-known of these is ensemble Algus (blessing), directed by Ivan Alekseyev, who is the leader of the Yakut khomus playing school. Ivan Alekseyev is a researcher of musical instruments and philologist at the Yakut Academy of Sciences.

Sengedorj performs three highly individual xöömii styles: xarigaa, xarxiraa and Altain xöömii. The Mongolian word xarig refers to the flow of water over stones or other objects. This is brilliantly represented by the soft shimmering harmonics of xarigaa. Altain xöömii is a variant of Sengedorj’s normal xöömii style.

Rusland / Prof. Shurov
Vyacheslav Shchurov (1937, Moscow) is a collector, investigator, and propagandist of folk music. He is professor at the Moscow Conservatory and scientific director of the laboratory of folk music. He is doctor in art-history and author of monographs and many articles on musical folklore, and of several compilations of folk songs (Russian, Mordvinian, Abkhazian, and Gypsy songs). He is a producer of records with collections of folk songs and melodies. His specialization is the musical folk art of South Russia and Siberia. In his research, he pays a lot of attention to the aesthetical aspects of folk music performance and to folk polyphony.
Starting in 1990, he has begun a cooperation with PAN Records to release a series of CD’s with recordings of authentic musical folklore from different peoples of Russia (musical folklore from South Russia; Russian instrumental folk melodies) and the former USSR: Mari, Chuvash, Bashkirs, Altaiians, Kirgizians, Tuvans, and Yakuts.

The Chkotua family folklore ensemble (nine persons in total) from the village of Mgudzyrkhua, Gudauta district, Abkhazia.
Traditionally in Abkhazia, just like with many other Caucasian peoples, only men sing in chorus.
In the Chkotua family this tradition is not observed, and the women sing together with the men, although the men prefer to sing heroic songs without the support of female voices.
The Chkotua family folklore ensemble performs songs of different genres that clearly show the peculiarities of traditional unison singing.

The Echeykin family of talented folk musicians from the village Ener-Sola (Morkinsky region) has gained a big popularity among the Meadow Mari. Pjotr Echeykin, the head of the family, plays the shjuvor (bagpipe), the ‘straw’ (a reed instrument made from mush grass), the shiyaldysh (reed pipe), and the shushpyk (clay ocarina). He has taught his sons and relatives to play these instruments.

16. Sarodilasi krasna jagoda 5:35
Nikolay Titov (born 1928), a unique singer, blind since early childhood, lives in Larinsky khutor of Alexeyevskiy district, South Russia, near the Don iver. He himself (without any tutors) managed to master the playing techniques of various instruments, such as bayan (modified accordion), balalaika and guitar and so became skilled at accompanying his singing. The lyrical song named “Zarodilas’ krasna yagoda” (“A red berry has grown”, no. 14) became well known among professional musicians who are interested in Cossack styles – definitely owing to Nikolay Titov’s convincing version (with bayan accompaniment).

Qin is het oude getokkelde snaarinstrument van de chinese geleerden, in principe bedoeld voor meditatie en zelfreflektie. Het ideale publiek bestaat uit 1 persoon. Dit was een ideale opname.

Phones (enkelvoud: phoni, dat “stem” betekent) zijn lokale melodieën vande grieks- Cypriotische bevolking, die gewoonlijk alleeen in een bepaald dorp of streek werden gezongen, en daar hun naam aan ontleend hebben. Soms worden phones zelfs alleen aan een bepaalde familie toegeschreven. Op zo’n melodie kunnen verschillende teksten worden gezongen. En om het ingewikkeld te maken kan dezelfde tekst ook op verschillende lokale melodieên worden gezongen.
Phones worden alleen door mannen gezongen, die een goede tenor stem moeten hebben.
De inhoud van phones valt gewoonlijk in de categorie liefdeslied of grappig/spottend.
tegenwoordig worden deze melodieën over heel Cyprus gezongen, meestal tijdens volksfeesten of trouwpartijen.

8. Yoli. 5:18
Herbert Kinobe, born 19/07/1983, is a young man from the Baganda tribe in Uganda. He got his musical education in the Ndere Troupe. A song in the Bambara language (from Mali). Played on adungu, a 9-string arched harp of the Alur people of northwestern Uganda.
Recorded in the evening of 13 August 2003 in the office of PAN Records, at Hommelveld, Leiden, Netherlands.

9. Ezabuo (Improvisation). 2:10
Performed on sixuanhuohuo (brass Jew’s harp with four lamellas) by Ma Guoguo (b. 1976, female) from the Yi ethnic group, Ninlang County, Yunnan Province, China.
Ma Guoguo announces the tune before starting.
The multiple Jew’s harp of the Yi consists of two or more brass lamellas of about 6 cm long; each with a v-shape cut in their surface. Attached at their base, they open up in a fan shape in preparation for playing. The intimate sound of the Yi Jew’s harp huohuo makes it ideal for courtship rituals. There are Jew’s harps with two lamellas (tushihuohuo), three lamellas (magahuohuo) and four lamellas (sixuanhuohuo).
Ma Guoguo is one of China’s best-known players of the instrument. Aged 19 at the time of recording, she was working as a chambermaid in a country hotel. She started to play at age five, and has kept up the art so fervently that she now has a permanent mark on her cheek from her years of playing. In 1990 she won a major prize in Guangzhou (Canton) in a national contest for music of the national ethnic minorities in China. The year 2005 saw her first performance abroad, when she performed at the Amsterdam China Festival.

Genre: ‘qing shen yin yue’, the music of inviting Gods.
This melody usually accompanies a shaman when performing. Played on di (Transverse bamboo flute)

A wizard asks the gods about the dead in the nether world. Played on plucked lute san xian (three strings plucked).
Genre: ‘Da ben qu’
The corpus of da ben qu is a collection of melodies and epics from the Bai tradition. Belonging to da ben qu are a large number of melodies that can symbolize certain activities or certain states of mind.
Duan Yao Cai (b. 1959) is a blind professional musician from Xi Zhou village, 15 km north of Dali. When he was around 3 months of age, he lost sight, due to measles. He is a professional musician and plays on the streets and at festivities and supports his family with his earnings, as his wife is sickly and cannot work.
Titles in Bai language are written phonetically (in Pinyin).
Recorded on 23 October 1998, late afternoon, in the house of Duan Mao, his elder brother, in Yong Xin village near dali, Yunnan Povince, China.

I first met him in April 1995, when I visited Dali for a five-day festival called Sa Ngwa Tze (third month fair), and recorded him in the garden of the local Culture Bureau. He made so much impression on me that I’ve always wanted to go back and meet him again. Recently I had the opportunity. My interpreter and I flew to Dali’s new airport, a whole improvement over the 8 hour ride from Kunming to Dali of 1995. We took the bus to Dali, checked into the Jin Hua hotel, an amazingly cheap hotel at 50 Renminbi a night (which is around 8 Canadian dollars), rented a bicycle, and rode to Yong Xin village on a sloping road, which took us about two hours, maybe three. I completely lost track of time, cycling with the Cangshan Mountains on my left, Lake Erhai on my right, the saddle too low causing cramps, and the sun burning on my head. We had to stop at a village market to buy me a hat, otherwise I would have been burned, or melted.
When we arrived in Yong Xin village, at the house of Duan Yaocai’s older brother Duan Mao, it was mid-afternoon and Duan Yaocai had been waiting for us since early morning, as he and we didn’t know at what time we would arrive. His family had bought him a new pair of pants and new shoes that were polished shiningly.
It is like no time has passed. He recognized us by our voices and seemed happy to play for us.
I recorded a few funeral melodies, a wedding song, an epic song, a lament, a praise song to the Gods. Duan Yaocai is a small man, who always has his head bent when he sits or stand, but his voice is amazingly rich in timbre and texture. I close my eyes, sharing his darkness, and let his melodies and songs flood me.

Contents: “There are strong beautiful horses on the grassland. The girl takes care of the horses.”
The song has no title, jole (in Chinese muge) is the name of the genre. ‘Le’ is Tibetan for ‘song’.

13. Pay le (song for sheep shearing). 2:02
Musician: Norsang (vocals). (member of the Nagchu Song and Dance Company)
Characteristics: the wool is compared to white clouds. After shearing the wool piles up like a white mountain, that is compared to the white mountains of Tibet. This song is sung during sheep-shearing. The meaning of the song is: we have wealth and happiness.

14. Rwezhe (fiddle dance) 4:23

Musicians: Jado—dzanjan (tibetan guitar); Ji Tso—yangchin (hammerde dulcimer); Ashi—biwang (two-stringed fiddle); Tseden Tsokar—biwang; Namlang—tsuri (tambourine).
Characteristics: a reba dance. The interpretation is lyrical. Dances like this with a fast rhythm usually are played at festivities.
First verse: in honour of the holy mountain Nyonchen Thanglha and in honour of the holy river Nagchu. That is my homeland.
Second verse: steppeland Tchangtsatan is my dear homeland.
The reba (Tibetan for ‘performing artist’) (also transcribed as rapa, raba) is song, dance, acrobatics and Tibetan Opera all rolled into one, and therefore is performed by professionals. Every song and dance troupe of the eastern counties of north Tibet has it in its repertoire. As a rule it is a boisterous group dancing, with the dancers rigging hand-bells and beating drums while prancing. During performances on the countryside the soloist plays the yak-horn violin as he sings and dances.

15. Aada – tbel (bas drums) 14:31
Mahmoud Ghinia + ensemble (Morocco)
introduktie, normaal gesproken opgevoerd als een processie-achtige entree in het huis waarin de Lilla (trance ceremonie) plaatsvindt. Diverse stukken uit het Aada repertoire kunnen worden gekozen, afhankelijk van de stemming van de Maleem (meester), waaronder: La’afo en El Benia.
Opgenomen op 28 November 1999 in Volksbuurt Museum, ’s Gravenhage, Netherlands.
Maleem Mahmoud Ghinia: guimbri (driesnarige bas-luit) + tabal, a cylindrical, wooden drum.
Moktar Ghinia, Abdellah Ghinia, Mohammed Outanine, Mohammed Abdellaoui en Abdelltif Abdellaoui zijn zangers en dansers. Ze bespelen stalen kleppers cq castagnettes (krkaba, qarqba of crotales) of klappen hun handen ritmisch.
De muzikanten zijn afkomstig uit Essaouira, een 16e eeuwse portugese havenvesting (vroeger bekend als Mogador), ongeveer 500 km ten zuiden van Casablanca aan de atlantische zeekust.
De rol van de Maleem (‘meester’) is om de ceremonie te leiden en via zijn instrument de geesten (die bezit nemen van de dansers) aan te roepen en te bezweren. Elk lied wordt door de Gnaoua een ‘mluk’ genoemd, dat ruwweg te vertalen is als ‘geest’ met daarbij behorende melodie, gedrag, ritme, kleur en wierook. Hoewel de mluks in vaste volgorde gespeeld dienen te worden, worden ze niet alle in één ceremonie opgevoerd.
De Gnaoua zijn een Marokkaanse broederschap, waarvan het centrale ritueel de trance muziek ceremonie is. Het doel van deze ceremonie is de purificatie van de deelnemende dansers.
De taal varieert tussen arabisch en Bambara, met soms woorden in beide talen door elkaar. Hoewel de meeste muzikanten alleen maar hun eigen Mohgrebi-Arabisch spreken wordt de essentie van elk stuk begrepen zelfs als ze in een taal zingen die ze fonetisch geleerd hebben.
Maleem Mahmoud Ghinia is een van de meest bekende Gnaoua meesters heden ten dage in Marokko.

Billy Pigg 1902-1968 is said by many to have been the best player ever, – his musical legacy is undeniable, Billy learnt from the Clough family, and then extended the boundaries of possibility both in style and repertoire. Several of today’s pipers acknowledge his influence on their playing, particularly those who were fortunate enough to hear him live. Many recordings of Billy playing were made, mostly on private tapes, but the only ones currently available are those on compilation CD’s. A book about his life, including a collection of his tunes, was published in 1996.
Billy Pigg is regarded as one of the Northumbrian piping greats. This collection of recordings reflects the passion, drive and lyrical quality of Pigg’s playing. Billy Pigg himself says that when he was taught to play he was instructed to play the notes as though they were peas coming out of a pod. This is a perfect description of Pigg’s distinctive approach to the pipes. We are very lucky to have these recordings.

Forster Charlton & Colin Caisley: Northumbrian smallpipes.
Sunday night 31 January 1965, opname in Amsterdam at Henk Arends’ home.
Forster Charlton & Colin Caisley were invited by the Engelse Verkeersbureau (English Tourist Bureau) in Netherlands, for a manifestation in The Hague and a concert in Amsterdam that got cancelled. Still they came for sightseeing to Amsterdam (with singer Ann Guthrie) and got to visit Henk Arends.

Laika Karabey (1909-?)
She was born in Istanbul in 1909. She learnt playing tanbur from Hikmet Bey of Tanburi Cemil bey. She worked at the Oriental Music Center and at the same time, attended the Istanbul Municipality Conservatory. She took lessons from Rauf Yekta, Rahmi Bey and Ahmet Irsoy.
She taught culture, for many years at the Üsküdar American Girls Collage, Saint Michel French School and at some Greek and Armenian Schools.
She served at the Radio Istanbul as a chorus-chief and tanbur player.
Her articles on musical Theories and History of music have been published in various periodicals and journals particularly in "Music Magazine".
